How We Help at The Recovery Room |Pickleball Injury Clinic in Burlington

Initial Assessment

The first step is the INITIAL ASSESSMENT.  We will schedule approximatly 45 minutes to go over your injury and heath history, perform a thourough physical exam, and advise and send for additional tests such as x-rays or ultrsound if needed.  We will then go over our findings, our diagnosis, and our suggested care plan that will help you acheive your desired outcomes and goals.  We will most often give you some stretches, or exercises to begin at home until our next sceduled appointment.

Second Visit

We will begin this session by reviewing our recommended treatment plan, and making sure everyone is on the same page.  Treatment plans may include chiropractic adjustments, shockwave therapy, muscle release or manual therapy techniques and exercise.  We will also review the frequency and length of the treatment plan.  A common frequency for most injuries would be 1-2 visits per week, for 3-6 weeks depending on the nature of the injury.

We will then proceed with our first treatment session.

Subsequent visits

Majority of the time will be spent executing our treatment plan.  Incorporating chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, shockwave as indicated.  As necessary we will increase the intensity and progress your exercises.  At the end of our treatment plan we will perform a re-assessment and determine if we met our goals, and if further intervention is required.

Shockwave therapy in Burlington

Gets you back on the pickleball court faster!

Shockwave therapy is an advanced, non-invasive treatment modality that accelerates the body’s natural healing abilities.  Its effects include enhancing local blood circulation, increasing cellular metabolism and supporting the repair and regeneration of damaged or injured tissues.

Shockwave therapy works by using high energy sound/pressure waves and transmitting the energy into the target tissue, triggering the desired biological responses.  Shockwave therapy is extremely effective in dealing with some of the most common Pickleball related conditions or injuries, such as tennis elbow/pickleball elbow, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis and rotator cuff injuries.

Shockwave therapy can be mildly-moderatly uncomfortable during the treatment, however it is performed to patient tolerance.  The area may remain sore for a brief period after the treatment, which is usually followed by a pain relieving affect.  Typical sessions last from 5-10 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated, and most often 3-6 sessions are required to achieve the desired outcomes.

Most of the injuries we see from pickleball are repetitive strain injuries.  These injuries, such as tennis elbow, occur when the body does not have enough time to repair and recover from exercise or loading before being loaded again.  Since pickleball is so addicting and athletes usually play 3-6 times per week, there is a high amount of strain on the joints and tendons, and over time the injured area becomes painful.

As well, since the average age demographic in pickleball skews a little bit older, naturally our body recovers slower than our younger selves, further elevating our need for proper rest and recovery time.

The best way to insure you stay as injury free as possible is to maximize your recovery time.  Making sure you are eating well, drinking enough water, and getting good sleep is important.  Incorporating other types of exercise in your routine such as resitance training, yoga and pilates can also help protect our muscles and joints. And lastly, making sure we are warming up properly before sessions.  Most acute injuries will happen during the first 15 minutes of playing and a proper warm up can help prepare our bodies for activity.

It depends!  A lot of times for repetitive strain type injuries we don't have to stop altogether, but decreasing the frequency you are playing at temporarily might be recommended.  For more acute injuries (ankle sprains, or acute lower back pain) some time off will most likely be required.

Chiropractic, Custom Orthotics Fitting

Dr. Phil Wessel is a chiropractor with over seven years of experience helping patients in Burlington and Oakville recover from injury and stay active. Throughout his career, he noticed that many common muscle, tendon, joint, and spine injuries were often treated without addressing the underlying causes, leading to ongoing pain and recurring problems.

This realization led him to create The Recovery Room Chiropractic & Wellness—a clinic focused on providing effective, evidence-informed care for active adults and athletes who want to get back to the activities they love.

Dr. Phil’s treatment approach combines chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, shockwave therapy, and rehabilitation exercise to help patients recover from both acute and chronic injuries. He has a particular interest in treating tendon-related conditions, including Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, and jumper’s knee.

A graduate of the University of Guelph and New York Chiropractic College, Dr. Phil understands first hand the importance of staying active. Outside the clinic, you’ll find him spending time with his wife and two children, playing pickleball, or enjoying a round of golf whenever he gets the chance.

Helping active people recover, perform, and stay in the game.
